Simply brilliant...with a little spice thrown in. Over many decades the thought has recurred that I should become more familiar with Brownson's writings. Congenital indolence, however, has persistently prevailed. I am indeed grateful to the Gibbons Institute for motivating me to counteract that inertia.

I am sure I can also say of this article, "Them's fighting words". If my good friend and proudly strict Thomist Steven Long happens upon it, I have no doubt there will be a phantasmagoric, epicyclical rebuttal of gargantuan proportions. Well, bring it on. Let the good times roll.

For any interested in girding their loins in anticipation, I highly recommend a book written 75 years after this article appeared. That would be Hans Urs von Balthasar's "The Theology of Karl Barth". In Part III, "The Form and Structure of Catholic Thought", Balthasar summarizes the thought of Thomas Aquinas on Nature and Grace, and its interpretation by Karl Rahner, Henri de Lubac, and Balthasar himself.
